What is Salary Packaging?

Salary Packaging is a tax effective way to receive your salary as a combination of income & benefits that allows you to deduct some of your pre-tax income & use it to pay for a variety of benefits. By reducing your pre-tax income you can reduce the amount of income tax you pay & in turn increase the amount you take home each pay day.

Exempt Benefit Items

The Fringe Benefits Tax is a tax on certain benefits from your employer which do not include cash salary or wages. Within salary packaging, there are some items which are exempt from this tax.

Compassionate Travel
If you have experienced a sickness or loss of a relative, and you or an immediate family member is required to travel, you can be reimbursed the full amount, including travel, meals and accommodation.

Bus Travel
If you are a Brisbane City resident, you may salary package your go Card expenses, using the SPA bus Travel Benefit card.

Portable Electronic Device (PED)
Each FBT year, you can purchase a laptop or portable electronic device per year if it is used for work-related purposes.

Self-Education Expenses
These expenses include undertaking formal qualifications to improve specific skills or knowledge required in your current employment, or that will be beneficial for future employment.

Disability/Income Protection
This benefit helps put away money if you cannot work due to sickness or injury. With SPA, you can pay for disability/income protection with pre-tax dollars.

Put away additional super in pre-tax dollars, to increase the amount provided by your employer.

Home Office Expenses
These items include electronic devices, paper and other consumable office items. Paying for this pre-tax allows the home office user to work from home.

Professional Memberships/Subscriptions
Professional memberships or subscriptions to professional publications can be salary packaged if they contribute to your work.

Tools of Trade
If you need any items to perform your work, such as electronic tools, laptop accessories, protective gear and other items, these expenses can be paid using pre-tax dollars.

Mobile Phone
If your mobile phone is used for work purposed, you can salary package these costs to be paid for by your employer.
